Illicit Tennis Ball Toss — An Imaginary CCG Card
A downloadable prototype card
"Illicit Tennis Ball Toss" is a nonexistent card created for the Imaginary Cards Jam. It is a status card that affects the Agility phase of contests, a specific type of turn in the nonexistent game "Sir, Your Showdog is a Balrog." The game is a non-combat CCG themed around horse, dog, or other pet shows — with the twist that said pets are entirely fantasy creatures. There are several types of turns; three (Beauty, Agility, and Strength) that represent the phases of a single contest, and at least one turn afterwards for Downtime to represent an arbitrary amount of time passing between contests. The turns follow a set order:
- Beauty
- Agility
- Strength
- Downtime
The cycle then repeats until the game ends. To win at each phase of a contest, a single pet must score more points than any opponents and also meet a base threshold, usually 3, to beat any theoretical NPC contestants. If they do so, they win a Ribbon; the first player to achieve nine Ribbons wins the game. (Which means that games will last at least three Contests, barring unusual circumstances.) The final score is determined by the sum of two of a pet's base stats; each base stat contributes to two types of Contest phase.
- Flair: Affects Beauty & Agility
- Moxie: Affects Agility & Strength
- Form: Affects Strength & Beauty
(As an example, a pet participating in the Beauty phase of the contest would add up its Form and Flair stats to get its total Beauty score for that turn.)
Cards are played using Critter Cash, indicated by the 🐾 symbol, which you primarily earn via Sponsor cards. The costs of normal pet care are abstracted out, as it is always assumed that you have the time and resources to tend to your pets' health and happiness.
There are several other types of cards, including Pampering, Equipment, and Training. Interference-type cards, like Illicit Tennis Ball Toss, are unique in that they have a chance to earn a Foul; if you get three Fouls in a single contest, you are disqualified and automatically lose any remaining rounds. To check for a Foul, roll the size of die indicated on the card's Trouble Dice stat; on a 1, you have been caught and earn a Foul. Luckily for the mischievous, Fouls are cleared at the end of each Contest.
Interference cards also have an Edge, for types of pets the card is more effective against, and a Snag for types it has a disadvantage on. The type of Interference frequently has an effect as well; for example, Illicit Tennis Ball Toss, a Temptation-type Interference, is ineffective against pets with Poise. The Snag for it is that Space Cadet pets may not even notice the ball flying past them, but at least it has an Edge against Hyper pets such as puppies, who won't be able to resist the chance to sprint after a target.
Along with the full-size images, there is a plain-text document describing the text on the card and providing image IDs for those using screen readers or with similar accessibility needs.
