A downloadable prototype card

Boris the Conniving is a nonexistent card created for the Imaginary Cards Jam. It is Rare, as indicated by the silver bubble icon in the top left corner, and costs 5 Mola Moolah to play. The game, Betta Betta Manta Meta, is a unique Collectible Card Game (CCG) designed to be played against any other combat-focused CCG*, including Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh!

Setup and game structure follows the opponents' game system as much as possible, with the Manta Meta player taking on the win/loss condition and relevant stats thereof**. The game involves at least two players and an impartial arbitrator. There are cards (such as Boris the Conniving) which "wrap" cards of other systems, making them compatible with both Manta Meta and the source system, and non-wrapping cards which affect the opponent's deck, hand, or other system-agnostic circumstances directly. Non-Manta Meta cards may not interact with cards from Manta Meta unless they are wrapping a card of a compatible system***.

Other Manta Meta cards may do things such as:

  • Choose two stats of any card in play and swap them.
  • Redirect a card as it is being played, forcing it to have a different target of your choice.†
  • Trigger a specific action every time a card is drawn/played/etc.‡
  • Insert a special standard-sized Manta Meta card into your opponent's deck, which gives your opponent a bonus but which you may subvert at a moment's notice.
  • Shuffle target player's deck.
  • Prevent a game loss, but also prevent yourself from winning the game for three turns afterwards.

* Balance, fun, and smoothness of play not guaranteed.

** For example, if playing against someone using MTG, you would start with 20 Health.

*** Or unless the Manta Meta card in question explicitly states otherwise.

† Maintenance of friendships not guaranteed if this mechanic is used.

‡ It is recommended to use this mechanic sparingly for the sanity of everyone involved.

Along with the full-size images, there is a plain-text document describing the text on the card and providing image IDs for those using screen readers or with similar accessibility needs.
